March 2021 Project of The Month: Uwajimaya
Western Neon is pleased to unveil our partnership with Uwajimaya on a complete store-wide makeover of their bustling headquarters in the Chinatown-International District. We worked closely with their dedicated team to help realize a vibrant collection of updated signs, from the iconic south-facing entry to the interior, that communicated their new brand identity while speaking to the heritage of this iconic one-of-a-kind grocer and cultural touchstone.
We collaborated with Hoshide Wanzer Architects, Cushing Terrell, Bruce Hale Design, and Abbott Construction to design and build elements for each store department including, Produce, Meat, Seafood, Beverages, Specialty Items, Snacks, Home & Beauty, and custom Aisle Guides. While each section has its own identity, they all feature Uwajimaya's updated look featuring a spectrum of bold colors and pop-infused graphics that echo the brand's unique history.
Each store department unfolds into the next while loyal customers and new visitors navigate expanded aisles full of updated selections and valued favorites using signs that blend and boldly establish the store's interior.
From start to finish, our team designed and built signs that evoke Uwajimaya's ethos of craft and care while supporting its overall narrative.
This Pacific Northwest landmark has been in business since Fujimatsu Moriguchi first began selling fishcakes from the back of his truck to Japanese workers in Tacoma. We hope that he would be proud to see his family business shining bright almost 100 years later and we are honored to work with his family on this epic project. If you're not already a customer, drop by Uwajimaya today, stock up, and join an incredible journey!
